Arion Rizaj: “The Customer Is King — And Your Competitor Is Just One Click Away”

In a world where customers have endless choices and almost zero patience, delivering a great shopping experience is no longer a competitive advantage — it’s a necessity. As AI continues to transform e-commerce, the real winners won’t simply be those adopting the latest technology, but those using it to understand and serve their customers better.

We sat down with Arion Rizaj, Brand Ambassador of the 9th Regional E-commerce Conference, to explore how AI-driven personalization is reshaping online shopping, why customer experience matters more than website traffic, and what it takes for Balkan businesses to successfully expand beyond their local markets.

From smarter use of data and AI-powered decision-making to building trust and removing friction from the customer journey, Arion shares his perspective on the strategies that will define the next chapter of e-commerce growth.

His key message? Technology creates opportunities, but understanding your customers is what turns those opportunities into real business growth.

1. What is one e-commerce trend that you believe will significantly shape the industry over the next 12 months?

I think AI-driven personalization and shopping experiences will have a major impact. Customers increasingly expect businesses to understand what they need and make the buying process easier. AI is making that possible at a much greater scale.

But the real opportunity isn’t just using AI to sell more; it’s using it to create better experiences for customers. The businesses that stand out will be those that use AI to make shopping feel more relevant and effortless, without overwhelming customers or losing the human element of the experience.

2. What is one thing businesses should stop doing in e-commerce — and one thing they should start doing immediately?

Businesses should stop treating traffic as the ultimate measure of success. Getting people to your website means very little if you’re not building trust or converting that attention into sales.

What they should start doing immediately is understanding their customers better, using data to identify where they lose potential buyers, and improving the entire customer journey. Sometimes, the problem isn’t that you need more visitors. It’s that your checkout process is too complicated, delivery costs aren’t clear, or customers don’t have enough confidence to complete their purchase.

Growth often comes from fixing what’s already there before spending more to attract new customers.

3. What is the biggest opportunity for e-commerce businesses in the Balkans right now?

I believe the biggest opportunity is to think beyond local markets. The Balkans has talented people, ambitious businesses, and a growing digital ecosystem, but many companies still think within the boundaries of their own country.

E-commerce gives businesses the opportunity to reach customers across the region and beyond without needing the same physical presence that traditional retail requires. Of course, regional growth requires more than reaching new audiences. Businesses need to make cross-border payments, delivery, returns, and customer support as seamless as possible.

The companies that combine strong products, customer trust, reliable logistics, and a regional mindset will have a real advantage. The opportunity is there, but execution will determine who captures it.

4. How is AI changing the way you work, and what is one AI tool or use case you believe every e-commerce professional should know about?

AI is changing the way I approach work by helping me think through problems, challenge assumptions, explore ideas, and move from thinking to execution faster. I use Claude to challenge assumptions, evaluate different perspectives, and explore strategic opportunities. For me, AI is more than a productivity tool; it’s a way to move from ideas to execution more efficiently. The real value lies in knowing which questions matter most, using AI to uncover new perspectives, and turning those insights into strategic decisions that move the business forward.

One use case I believe every e-commerce professional should explore is using AI to analyze customer feedback, sales data, and business challenges to identify patterns and opportunities. The real value comes from asking better questions and using AI to make better decisions, rather than simply automating existing tasks.

At the same time, AI-generated insights are only as useful as the data and judgment behind them. Professionals still need to question the results, validate assumptions, and make the final decisions.

5. If you could give one piece of advice to a business that wants to grow in e-commerce, what would it be?

Start with your customer, and let technology help you serve them better. Understand the problem you’re solving, the value you bring, and why customers should choose you over the competition. Then use technology strategically to deliver that value more effectively, personalize the shopping experience, and remove friction at every stage of the customer journey. The customer is king” is no longer a business cliché; it’s a business rule. And in e-commerce, the king has options, zero patience, and your competitor just one click away.

The fundamentals still matter: a product people genuinely want, transparent pricing, reliable delivery, and a seamless customer experience that builds trust and brings people back. Technology should strengthen these fundamentals, not distract from them.

Build, test, measure, and improve continuously. You don’t need to get everything right from day one, but you do need to learn faster and adapt quicker than your competition. AI and other technologies can help you understand customer behavior, make smarter decisions, and scale what works. Ultimately, sustainable growth comes from combining the right technology with a clear value proposition and a deep understanding of your customer.

6. What are you most looking forward to about the upcoming 9th Regional E-commerce Conference, and what would you say to people who are considering attending?

What I look forward to most is the opportunity to connect with people who are building, challenging, and transforming the e-commerce industry in our region. Conferences like this are valuable because they bring different perspectives into one room and create opportunities for collaboration that can continue long after the event.

My advice to anyone considering attending is simple: come with curiosity and a willingness to challenge the way you currently do things. Sometimes, one conversation or one idea is enough to challenge the way you do business. The value of attending is not just what you learn in the room, but what you take back and put into practice afterward.
